How to Set Goals for your Podcast

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and finished 2022 however you saw fit! But now 2023 is here, it’s time to jump back into things!

For many, they may have already begun or set their goals for the year but it’s never too late to lay out a plan and make progress. Or maybe you’ve already set personal and goals for your business but forgot about your podcast. With so many moving pieces it can be hard to know what to focus on. So, today we are looking at how to set goals for your show.

Why Set Goals

There can be a multitude of reasons to set goals. Maybe you have very specific reasons why you started your podcast, to begin with, like to make money or expand your business reach. Having goals can help you keep your eye on the prize.

At the same time, goals help guide what you are giving your attention to, help keep momentum for what you want, and keep you aligned (positive psychology).

For yourself and your podcast to grow, you want to set goals that you can measure and see the progress. You want to see that all your hard work is going towards what you want to achieve vs away from it. If you do end up straying, that’s okay! Take a step back, look at the information you have been keeping track of, and re-evaluate! You may need to set check-ins more frequently or rework your plan of attack. Either way, setting goals can be hugely beneficial not only to your podcast but to yourself and your business as well.

How to Set Goals For Your Podcast

You understand the importance of setting goals not only for your show but for life in general. But now you are thinking, how do I set goals for my podcast? There are a handful of different angles you may set your goals depending on what you want to achieve. Some areas you may focus on:

  • Goals for your show but for your business such as growing your audience, looking to create brand awareness, or maybe generating leads for your services/products.

  • Goals for your podcast such as growing your listener base, being able to sell merchandise, or having a Patreon account.

  • Or even for more personal reasons like getting your story out there or bringing awareness to something.

Whatever it may be, you can always adjust and change them as you and your show evolve.

Once you’ve figured out what area you want your goals to be in (and maybe they are all over the place). Begin setting your SMART goals (Asana has a great article on this here).

Then you can begin taking the actionable steps to achieve them in 2023!

Examples of Goals for Your Podcast in 2023

We’ve looked at why to set goals and how to get started so now we are going to go over some examples for podcasting and ways you can tackle them!

  1. Get 10 new clients from your podcast in 6 months

    • Action plan:

      • Would need to land approximately 3 clients every month to hit your goal in 6 months.

      • Will be using a specific CTA in the show, show notes, and on social media (podcast account if have one) to help gear listeners/followers to your services.

      • Will be using specific podcast links (if they connect with you that way) or having people tell you where they came from.

      • every week you will be posting on social media once and using a CTA in the show to lead people to sign up as a client with you.

    • Check-in Plan:

      • Every month, check in and see how it’s going. View what is working, and what isn’t, is something that could be adjusted.

  2. Gather 5 reviews + ratings for the show every month for all of 2023

  • Action plan:

    • Will need to get 5 reviews every month for 12 months.

    • Will include a CTA to review + rate the podcast on the show.

    • Will run at least one giveaway that when people review and send us a screenshot will be entered in. (Example: run it in the month of your podcast anniversary!)

    • Will post on social media asking for people to rate and review the show.

  • Check-in Plan:

    • Every month, check in on the reviews and ratings and see if you gained more. If not, figure out what could be adjusted or changed. This can be trial and error.
